Arrest in hospital: a study of in hospital cardiac arrest outcomes.

The effect of advances in cardiac arrest management over the last five decades on in-hospital cardiac arrest survival rates is not clear. Data on 212 arrests between January 2010 and May 2013 were retrospectively analyzed by means of an audit form based upon the Utstein template for in-hospital cardiac arrest, with a view to identifying significant associations between arrest characteristics and return of spontaneous circulation or survival to discharge. Significant associations were identified between return of spontaneous circulation and location (ward, 36 patients (38%) vs. ICU, 33 Patients (56%); P = 0.032), whether an arrest was witnessed or not (82 patients (52%) vs. 9 patients (30%); P = 0.029), whether the initial rhythm was shockable or non-shockable (28 patients (85%) vs. 38 patients (31%); P \u3c 0.001), whether the first dose of adrenaline was administered within 2 minutes of arrest onset or later (13 patients (54%) vs. 12 patients (28%); P = 0.04)

Evaluation of Condensed Algal Residue Solubles as an Ingredient in Cattle Finishing Diets

A study was conducted to evaluate feeding 0, 2.5, or 5.0% of a novel liquid feed, Condensed Algal Residue Solubles (CARS), in one of two base diets with CARS replacing corn. ! e two base diets were fed to mimic Northern Great Plains (high moisture and dry rolled corn blend fed with wet distillers grains plus solubles) and Southern Great Plains (steam- flaked corn and dry distillers grains plus solubles) feedlot diets. ! ere were no interactions between base diet and CARS inclusion. Feed intake and longissimus muscle area decreased as CARS inclusion increased in the diet. A quadratic effect was shown for average daily gain, feed efficiency, final adjusted body weight, hot carcass weight, 12th rib fat, and yield grade, increasing as CARS was included up to 2.5% of diet dry matter, then decreased at 5% inclusion. Marbling score improved with increased inclusion of CARS, with the highest score at 5% CARS inclusion. Including CARS at 2.5% of diet dry matter improved feed efficiency in both Northern and Southern Great Plains diets

Tapering Analysis of Airways with Bronchiectasis

Bronchiectasis is the permanent dilation of airways. Patients with the disease can suffer recurrent exacerbations, reducing their quality of life. The gold standard to diagnose and monitor bronchiectasis is accomplished by inspection of chest computed tomography (CT) scans. A clinician examines the broncho-arterial ratio to determine if an airway is brochiectatic. The visual analysis assumes the blood vessel diameter remains constant, although this assumption is disputed in the literature. We propose a simple measurement of tapering along the airways to diagnose and monitor bronchiectasis. To this end, we constructed a pipeline to measure the cross-sectional area along the airways at contiguous intervals, starting from the carina to the most distal point observable. Using a phantom with calibrated 3D printed structures, the precision and accuracy of our algorithm extends to the sub voxel level. The tapering measurement is robust to bifurcations along the airway and was applied to chest CT images acquired in clinical practice. The result is a statistical difference in tapering rate between airways with bronchiectasis and controls

Web-Ice: integrated data collection and analysis for macromolecular crystallography

Synopsis Web-Ice is a scalable, extendable and portable software application for rapid on-line diffraction image analysis, autoindexing and strategy calculation. The Web-Ice architecture, software components and functionality both as a stand-alone application and as part of a beamline control system are described. Abstract New software tools are introduced to facilitate diffraction experiments involving large numbers of crystals. While existing programs have long provided a framework for lattice indexing, Bragg spot integration, and symmetry determination, these initial data processing steps often require significant manual effort. This limits the timely availability of 1 data analysis needed for high-throughput procedures, including the selection of the best crystals from a large sample pool, and the calculation of optimal data collection parameters to assure complete spot coverage with minimal radiation damage. To make these protocols more efficient, we developed a network of software applications and application servers, collectively known as Web-Ice. When the package is installed at a crystallography beamline, a programming interface allows the beamline control software (e.g., Blu-Ice / DCSS) to trigger data analysis automatically. Results are organized based on a list of samples that the user provides, and are examined within a Web page, accessible both locally at the beamline or remotely. Optional programming interfaces permit the user to control data acquisition through the Web browser. The system as a whole is implemented to support multiple users and multiple processors, and can be expanded to provide additional scientific functionality. Web-Ice has a distributed architecture consisting of several stand-alone software components working together via a well defined interface. Other synchrotrons or institutions may integrate selected components or the whole of Web-Ice with their own data acquisition software. Rebooting an Old Script by New Means: Teledildonics—The Technological Return to the ‘Coital Imperative’

Teledildonics, a form of digital-mediated sexual interaction, opens new possibilities for the understanding of sexual activity. At first glance, it disrupts conventional preconditions and assumptions about sexual interaction, by allowing the dimension of touch despite the physical distance between partners and, ultimately, promoting a sexual dimension definitely disconnected from the reproductive model of sexuality. However, by scrutinizing the design and functionality of the devices, as well as the discourses presented by three commercial companies—LovePalz, Lovense and Kiiroo—I suggest that this technology reinforces the ‘coital imperative’, by equating sexual interaction with penetration of the vagina by the penis. Although permitting other formulations, specifically for non-heterosexual couples, the penetrative act remains a presupposition.
